Dental Care for Kids With Special Health Care Needs: Gentle, Patient Care in Wendell and Holly Springs

Dental Care for Kids in Holly Springs and Wendell

For many families, a dental visit is a routine errand. For families of children with special health care needs, it can feel like a mountain. New sounds, bright lights, unfamiliar hands, and a reclining chair can be a lot for any child. For a child with autism, sensory processing differences, or a complex medical history, it can be overwhelming.

You know your child better than anyone. Our job is to listen, adapt, and build a dental home where your child can feel safe. Here’s how we do it.

Who We Care For

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes special health care needs as any physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional condition that requires extra support. At The Smiling Turtle, we welcome children with many conditions, including:

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • ADHD and anxiety
  • Sensory processing differences
  • Down syndrome and other genetic conditions
  • Cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities
  • Developmental delays
  • Heart conditions, bleeding disorders, and other medical complexities

Pediatric dentists complete specialized training in caring for children with special health care needs. Dr. Anna Au served as Chief Resident during her pediatric residency, where she honed her skills in this kind of care, and she spent years serving families at a community health center before specializing.

Why Dental Care Matters Even More

Children with special health care needs can face a higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Some medications cause dry mouth or contain sugar. Some children have trouble brushing, have strong food preferences, or graze throughout the day. And dental pain can be hard to spot in a child who can’t easily describe it. Changes in behavior, sleep, or eating may be the only clues.

Regular preventive visits help us catch problems early, before they become painful or require more involved treatment.

How We Adapt Each Visit

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Depending on your child’s needs, we may:

  1. Learn about your child first. We’ll ask about triggers, calming strategies, communication style, and what has or hasn’t worked at past visits.
  2. Plan the timing. Some children do best at quieter times of the day. Let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
  3. Take it step by step. We use tell-show-do, simple language, and extra time. Some children benefit from short “get to know us” visits before any treatment.
  4. Keep you close. Parents are part of the team, and your presence is often the biggest comfort.
  5. Bring familiar comforts. Headphones, a tablet, a favorite toy, or a weighted blanket are all welcome.
  6. Coordinate care. When needed, we work with your child’s pediatrician, specialists, or therapists.
  7. Offer sedation options. For some children, nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation can make treatment safer and more comfortable.

We also have gentle, non-drilling options like silver diamine fluoride, which can help stop some cavities without traditional fillings.

Home Care Tips That Help

  • Try different toothbrushes. Some kids love an electric brush. Others prefer a soft manual or a three-sided brush.
  • Mind the flavor. Mild or unflavored toothpaste can help children with taste or texture sensitivities.
  • Find a good position. Sitting behind your child, with their head resting against you, gives you a better view and more control.
  • Use a visual schedule. Pictures of each brushing step help many kids know what’s coming.
  • Keep it short and consistent. Same time, same place, same routine, every day.
  • Celebrate small wins. Even 30 seconds of cooperative brushing is progress.

Local Support for Families

Families in our area have strong local resources. The Autism Society of North Carolina, based in Raleigh, offers support and education for families across the state. We’re glad to be part of your child’s broader care network, whether you live near our Wendell office on Treelight Way or our Holly Springs office on Village Walk Drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I come with my child into the treatment area?
In most cases, yes. Your presence often helps your child feel calm, and we’ll talk with you about what works best.

What if my child can’t sit in the dental chair?
That’s okay. We can adjust where and how we examine your child, and we’ll go at their pace.

Will you need my child’s medical records?
For some conditions, such as heart problems or bleeding disorders, we may ask to coordinate with your child’s physician before treatment.

How often should my child come in?
Many children with special health care needs benefit from visits every three to six months. We’ll recommend a schedule based on your child’s risk.

Can we schedule a practice visit first?
Ask our team when you call. Short familiarization visits can help some children feel more comfortable before treatment.

My child is nonverbal. How will you know if something hurts?
We watch closely for body language and behavior, and we rely on you to tell us what your child’s cues mean.
